Newquay, Cornwall began life as a fishing and trading port, and most of its money came from pilchards. You can still see traces of Newquay’s past in the old harbour area and the Huer’s (lookout’s) hut above the town, used for spotting shoals down below. When the railway arrived in Newquay in 1876, visitors soon followed, and the town’s grand hotels were built to accommodate them.
Today’s Newquay is an excellent place for a traditional seaside holiday. There are safe, sheltered beaches that are superb for families, as well as plenty of fun attractions like Newquay Zoo. Start the day with a dip in the sea, and end it with a fish and chips supper: perfect.
