Tucked away in the heart of Port Isaac’s historic village, The Shambles is a lovingly restored Grade II listed cottage that captures the charm and character of Cornwall’s north coast. In this edition of our Owner Stories Behind the Stay series, we speak with the owner of The Shambles, who shares what inspired them to return to their Cornish roots, the vision behind their renovations, and why partnering with Cornish Escapes helped bring their dream to life.
As a property owner, what were your reasons to begin Holiday letting in Cornwall?
I moved away from Cornwall when I was 18, but it has always felt like home and all my family are still there. To enable us to spend more time there, we decided to invest in a property and Port Isaac was the obvious choice as it has such charm and a lovely community. We didn’t want the cottage to be sitting empty whilst we aren’t able to use it, so decided to make it available for holiday rental.
Since purchasing the property, we can see that you have carried out extensive renovations prior to entering the market. What top tip would you like to share with anyone who is planning to carry out a similar project to prepare for letting?
Consider who you want your property to appeal to and what vibe you want to create. I wanted the cottage to keep its charm but also feel relaxing, luxurious and appeal to guests all year round. In the winter months it needs to warm and cosy. I also felt it was important to have a something that made the property stand out against others on the holiday rental market in the area, so I designed the main bedroom around the copper bath which I feel makes it unique and romantic.
Can you share some insights into your experience of researching and choosing a holiday let agency for your property in Port Isaac, Cornwall?
I wanted to use a local company and researched extensively. Cornish Escapes are the third agent we have used as unfortunately the previous two agents were unable to offer the service we expected. I wanted an agent that appreciated this was our home that we were choosing to share with others, appreciated the charm of the cottage, understood the local area and offered equally good service to the owners as well as the guests. I also wanted an agent that was able to actively market the property and operate in partnership with us. It was a difficult decision to leave the previous agents because of the effort it takes and the initial costs that can be involved but moving to Cornish Escapes has been the best decision I have made.
In your words, how would you best describe the features and amenities that make The Shambles stand out to guests?
The Shambles is perfectly located in the heart of the old village but set back from the hustle and bustle of the Main Street. It has private parking located at the top of the village. It is Grade II listed with many original features including the Delabole slate flagstone floor and the slate hanging on the exterior. It is decorated with earthy tones which are relaxing, the individually sourced furniture and decor make it feel luxurious. The log burner and comfy sofa make it a cosy in the cooler seasons, whilst the thick stone walls make it cool in the summer. The copper bath within the bedroom is a great romantic feature and is a nod to the seafaring heritage of the village. The kitchen is well equipped with good quality appliances, which makes staying there even more relaxing and enjoyable, it is a home away from home.
What measures do you take to ensure that every guest has a welcoming and memorable stay at The Shambles?
I ensure that the property is well maintained and paintwork is regularly refreshed to ensure the cottage is at its best for guests. We have a fantastic housekeeper who ensures that the property is spotlessly clean, the linen is beautifully laundered, and the towels are fluffy. We provide a welcome pack so that guests can arrive and relax with a hot or cold drink and some locally produced snacks.
As an owner who signed with us for Marketing and Support. How have you found your bookings with us during your first month of marketing with us?
Bookings have been exceptional and unlike anything we have experienced with the previous two agents, I only wish I had discovered Cornish Escapes when we first started letting the property in 2021.
