Cornish Wineries And Vineyards
Thanks to a milder climate and plenty of hours of sunshine, Cornwall has become a successful wine producing region. The English wine industry has really taken off over the last few years, with Cornwall at the forefront.
Most Cornish wineries and orchards offer tours and tasting events: what nicer way could there be to spend an afternoon on your Cornwall holidays? Here’s a quick look at our wonderful, must-visit vineyards.
Polgoon Vineyard
Polgoon is a small vineyard and orchard just outside Penzance in West Cornwall, producing still and sparkling wines, ciders and fruit juices.
John and Kim Coulson, former fish merchants and self-taught winemakers, purchased a derelict flower farm in 2002. With help from the Camel Valley team (more about them in a minute), they planted rain-hardy German vines and had their first harvest in 2006.
They started the orchard as a backup plan, but it’s since gone on to crop heavily and produce several award-winning ciders. For the non-drinkers, Polgoon apple juice is simply gorgeous.
You can find Polgoon’s delicious produce in shops, restaurants and bars across Cornwall, or treat yourself to an online delivery. However, the best way to enjoy a glass of Polgoon is by booking onto one of their vineyard tours or a table at their Vinehouse Restaurant.
Camel Valley Vineyard
Camel Valley is an award-winning, family-run vineyard up near Bodmin. Their sunny slopes have been producing grapes since 1989, resulting in some of the most-admired English wines in the business.
Bob and Annie Lindo bought their Camel Valley farm initially to raise livestock, then realised that their idyllic setting might be the perfect spot for grape vines. Years of backbreaking work followed, but when their very first wine won a medal in a national English wine competition, the Lindos knew it was worth persevering.
Since then, their wines have won numerous awards, such as the prestigious International Wine Challenge Gold Medal for their “Cornwall” sparkling wine.
Camel Valley is exported across the world and you can order online or simply pick up a bottle in your local Waitrose. However, the best way to enjoy a glass is in Camel Valley itself, sitting at a table on the vineyard’s terrace, gazing out across the vines.
Knightor Winery
Knightor Winery is in a lovely location near the Eden Project. The winery hosts weddings, civil partnerships and other events in their beautiful old rustic buildings.
Knightor produces small batches of still and sparkling wines as well as vermouth, from vines that grow a short drive away on the South Cornish coast. Their Porthscatho restaurant, The Vine By Knightor, serves delicious local food (try their famous fried chicken) accompanied by, as you’d expect, a fabulous drinks’ menu.
You can explore the Knightor vineyards and orchards by booking onto one of their tours and tasting events. Don’t miss their well-stocked shop and you can also treat yourself to an online delivery of these characterful Cornish wines.
Looe Valley Vineyard
Established in 2008, Looe Valley Vineyard produces still red, white and rose wines from its beautiful site in South East Cornwall.
It’s a small, family-run business that makes lovely artisan wines from German grapes like Bacchus and Solaris, which cope well with the British climate. You’ll find Looe Valley wines in hotels and restaurants across Cornwall and you can try some yourself through their online shop.
The vineyard is open for tours and tastings during the summer, so if you’re on your Cornwall holidays between May and September, add Looe Valley Vineyard to your Must Do list. They also offer bespoke private tours to groups of ten or more.
Trevibban Mill Vineyard
If you’re on holiday in Padstow, don’t miss a trip to these stunning vineyards and orchards just outside town. Trevibban Mill produces a range of still and sparkling wines and ciders, which you can buy online or in their shop.
Better still, reserve a table in the vineyard, where you can enjoy their wares alongside quality local food, produced by the winemakers’ chef son. The team also runs guided wine and cider tours and tastings, which again, make a great day out while you’re on holiday in Cornwall.
Trevibban is a family-run vineyard, which takes a small-scale and sustainable approach to viticulture. What started as an early retirement project has grown into a successful artisan winery, which also hosts parties, events and weddings.
