Winter in St Ives: Places to Visit and Things to Do
With its golden beaches and beautiful gardens, West Cornwall is a popular summer destination; however, pretty St Ives is also a perfect place for your winter break. Quiet streets and near-empty sands highlight the beauty of our little Cornish town, although you will still find plenty to do during this calmer season.
There is something for everyone in wintry St Ives.
For Winter Walkers
The low sun and dramatic skies make the landscape even more stunning in winter; this season is favourable among artists and photographers. If you love a country or coastal walk, wrap up well, don stout boots and set off on foot to enjoy the views. The paths are peaceful at this time of year so if you are seeking solitude, you have picked the right season.
For Art Lovers
The art scene does not hibernate so you can visit the wonderful Tate St Ives all year round. Explore the permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions before watching the waves from the top floor cafe. Its sister attraction, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is arguably even more atmospheric on a winter’s day. St Ives’ little streets have more than their share of independent art galleries: the perfect place to potter on a chilly afternoon.
For Coffee Drinkers
Slow down and enjoy St Ives’ cafe culture. There is nothing quite like a steaming hot drink (and a cake) on a cold day. Add a wood burner and a sea view for maximum cosiness. We love Porthmeor Beach Cafe for the location, the Pedn Olva for the spectacular seascape and the Cornish Bakehouse for the fabulous pastries.
For Festive Fans
From late November, the harbour and Fore Street in St Ives twinkle with strings of sparkling lights, while the town’s quirky shops vie for the best Christmas window display. Look out for Christmas markets in and around St Ives where you can pick up unique Cornish gifts. Our local theatre company Kids R Us treats us to a traditional Christmas pantomime (Cinderella for 2025), and of course, there’s St Ives’ famous New Year’s celebrations to look forward to.
For the Sea Lovers
Those of us who love the sea embrace the wilder weather and deserted beaches. Stride out across the sands, tasting the fresh sea air as those cobwebs are swept away. Admire the hardy surfers who do not seem to feel the change in season: join them if you are pro-level or simply watch with a takeaway hot chocolate (sensible move). With dog beach restrictions lifted over the winter, it is a great time to bring your dog on holiday to St Ives.
For Foodies
Colder weather is the perfect excuse for comfort food, and you will find plenty of hearty dishes on offer in St Ives. Book well ahead to get a table with a view at Porthminster Kitchen, tucking into seafood while watching the harbour lights twinkling outside. If you are looking for a place for a romantic evening, reserve a candlelit table in The Loft Restaurant in the charming old Artists’ Quarter. Warm yourselves up with colourful Mediterranean food at lovely Ardor on Fore Street or take the kids for excellent burgers at Blas or St Ives Hub.
Winter Holiday Accommodation in St Ives
Last but not least, there is your warm and inviting holiday cottage or apartment in St Ives. Features like cosy wood burners and powerful hot showers are waiting for you when you finish your windswept walk. Pick up seasonal local produce from the farmers’ market and enjoy a mulled Cornish cider from your comfy sofa.
We still have last-minute availability for winter breaks, and if you’re busy, you can always sneak away for a quick two-night escape. Those tranquil beaches and cosy pubs are waiting for you…
